Emerging Issues in K-12 STEM Education:
What Business and Community Leaders Need to Know

Whether it's improving our health or harnessing clean energy, protecting our security or succeeding in a global economy, our future depends on reaffirming America's role as the world's engine of scientific discovery and technological innovation…that leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today, especially in math, science, technology and engineering.
~ President Barack Obama

Join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion. Providing K-12 students with an excellent science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is critical to the future competitiveness of our nation and our state.

It is critical to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers who generate new knowledge and discoveries. It is critical to produce the technologically proficient workforce that will bring us new products and services, and in building entirely new industries that transform our economy and the way we live. And - perhaps most compelling of all - it is critical to our children's futures as informed, engaged citizens and active participants in a world increasingly driven by scientific achievement and technological innovation.

The Institute for Systems Biology and the Technology Alliance co-present a Town Hall event focused on the state of K-12 STEM education in Washington. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on what is making a difference for students and teachers of STEM, and how members of the business and research communities can be effective advocates and partners in improving STEM education in our schools.

Institute for Systems Biology

The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is an internationally renowned, non-profit research institute headquartered in Seattle and dedicated to the study and application of systems biology. Founded by Leroy Hood, Alan Aderem and Ruedi Aebersold, ISB seeks to unravel the mysteries of human biology and identify strategies for predicting and preventing diseases such as cancer, diabetes and AIDS. ISB's systems approach integrates biology, computation and technological development, enabling scientists to analyze all elements in a biological system rather than one gene or protein at a time. Founded in 2000, the Institute has grown to 12 faculty and more than 300 staff members; an annual budget of more than $35 million; and an extensive network of academic and industrial partners.
